THE Pope's former butler was yesterday sentenced to 18 months in prison over the "Vatileaks" scandal.

Paolo Gabriele, 46, was found guilty of stealing thousands of sensitive documents about the Vatican's inner workings, including Pope Benedict's private papers. Some were leaked to the Italian press.

The married dad of three told the Vatican City State tribunal: "I do not feel I'm a thief. I feel guilty of betraying the trust of the Holy Father, whom I love as a son would."

He claimed he was a whistleblower on the "evil and corruption" in the Church.

He feared the pontiff, 85, was not wellinformed and was being "manipulated". Gabriele is widely expected to be pardoned by the Pope, his boss of seven years.
