       PONDER NAMED CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER AT SPRINT/UNITED
    KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 18, 1991 -- Ron J. Ponder, senior vice president, information and telecommunications division of Federal Express, has accepted the position of executive vice president and chief information officer for Sprint/United Telecom effective January 1992.  He will report directly to William T. Esrey, chairman and chief executive officer of Sprint/United.
    "Ponder is unquestionably one of the best in his field," said Esrey.  "Information services play a critical role in the telecommunications industry.  To be world class in this industry requires being world class in Information Services.  Ron brings an extensive track record of success in systems design and development coupled with an entrepreneurial spirit that will equate well with the corporate environment of Sprint/United."
    Ponder began his corporate career in 1977 at Federal Express, where he was initially involved in the development and implementation of effective revenue systems.  During 1980, he led a $250 million expansion of the company's one million square foot Superhub at the Memphis Airport.  Ponder initiated the systems development and engineering work for Federal's highly regarded Cosmos IIB package tracking system.  In 1982, his group began work on the Super Tracker system which today includes 50,000 hand-held data entry computers with bar code scanners, all able to be remotely linked to Federal Express headquarters in Memphis.
    In addition, Ponder was instrumental in the initiation and implementation of the Federal Express Quality Program, which led to the company's winning the Baldrige Award in 1990.
    Ponder earned a Ph.D. in operations research and computer science from Mississippi State University in 1974 and was a member of the faculty at Memphis State University until joining Federal Express in 1977.
    Reporting to Ponder will be Martin J. Kaplan, vice president- strategic architecture; Rod C. Mack, vice president, business systems; Gilbert E. Mauk, vice president, processing services; and John Mihalovich, vice president, information services.
    With the creation of Ponder's position, Art Krause, executive vice president and chief financial and information officer, will become executive vice president and chief financial officer.
    Ponder and his family will reside in Kansas City.  United Telecommunications, Inc., (UT) headquartered in Kansas City, is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.7 billion in annual revenues.  Its principal business units are Sprint, which provides a comprehensive array of global voice, data and video communications products and services on the only nationwide all- digital, fiber-optic network; North Supply; DirectoriesAmerica; and local telephone companies serving 3,000 communities in 17 states.
