POLYCOM REPORTS BEST UNIT SALES IN AUDIOCONFERENCING INDUSTRY IN FIRST QUARTER OF PRODUCTION; ADVANCED AUDIO TECHNOLOGY BREAKS OPEN MARKET

 WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Polycom, Inc. today announced that it sold more audioconferencing units in the fourth quarter of production, than any other vendor. The company shipped more than 2,000 SoundStation audioconferencing units.
 "Previously, annual U.S. sales of 4,000 speakerphone units was considered outstanding," said Brian Hinman, president, CEO and co- founder of Polycom. "Our SoundStation with its high-quality, full- duplex capability and low price, is breaking the audioconferencing market wide open. Organizations are now taking a second look at audioconferencing products as an effective way for groups to communicate with each other."

Businesses Rediscover Audioconferencing
 Jim Rhodes, principal telecommunications consultant, at Ralston Purina, whose products include Ralston cereal and pet food, and Eveready batteries, said, "Polycom's SoundStation won hands down on four criteria: ease of use, sound quality, full-duplex capability and low cost. I expect that it will encourage more audioconferences throughout the organization," he said.
 Warner Lambert, a drug company, has purchased SoundStations for use in its R&D laboratories in Ann Arbor, Mich. Debbie Earhart, telecommunications analyst, said, "We like the quality of SoundStation's audio. With this technology, we're able to have natural, more productive discussions."
 Already SoundStation is being used by companies in a variety of industries, including:
 Advertising: Darcy Masius Benton Bowles;
 Banking: First Security Bank (Utah);
 Consumer Goods: Ralston Purina;
 Education: University of Illinois;
 Insurance: Aetna Life, Great Southern Life, The Hartford
 Insurance Company, The Travelers, United Fidelity
 Life Insurance;
 Pharmaceuticals: Eli Lilly, Warner Lambert;
 Technology: Honeywell, Intel.
 Polycom's SoundStation, priced at $1,195, overcomes the poor audio quality of previous speakersphones by allowing clear, echo-free transmission in two directions simultaneously. This interactive capability allows a natural flow of talk even in the most animated conversations. The compact and elegant SoundStation is easy to install and use. It plugs into an analog phone line and provides a built-in dial pad similar to that of a standard telephone.

Sales To Accelerate
 Hinman predicts that Polycom's rate of sales will accelerate in coming months as the company completes its distribution network in North America and expands into international markets. "Many of our current customers are global or multinational companies who want to have the high quality of a SoundStation available for their international conference calls," he said.
 Polycom is now setting up an international network of distributors in Europe, the Pacific Rim and Latin America. In the U.S., Polycom distributes its products through telephone interconnect companies, teleconference service suppliers and VARs. Its distribution partners include Teleconferencing Technologies Inc. (TTI) and Confertech International. Polycom recently announced a joint marketing agreement with MCI Communications Corp.
 Polycom, founded in December 1990 and based in San Jose, Calif., is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art teleconferencing solutions that tap the huge pent-up demand for low cost, easy to use teleconferencing products in all corporate and government organizations. Polycom's venture capital investors include some of the top names in the industry; Accel Partners, Brentwood Associates, Oak Investment Partners, Institutional Venture Partners, and Venrock Associates.
