POLICE FARCE; Fury at Straw's 'new' recruits sham ABDICATION & CORONATION HISTORY OF THE 20TH CENTURY.

POLICE were outraged last night after Home Secretary Jack Straw's pledge to put 5,000 more bobbies on the beat was exposed as a sham.

A leaked memo revealed that police numbers are dropping so swiftly that an injection of new recruits would NOT increase overall strength.

Knowing this, the Treasury warned Mr Straw not to promise additional officers. But last month he said cash would be provided to up numbers from 126,000 to 131,000.

The Metropolitan Police Federation said: "We feel betrayed and very displeased."
