POINT DEFIANCE ZOO WELCOMES NEW WALRUS

POINT DEFIANCE ZOO WELCOMES NEW WALRUS
TACOMA, Wash., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Point Defiance Zoo &

Aquarium's walrus Georgie Girl was transferred to SeaWorld in Orlando, Fla., on Thursday, April 2. Georgie traded places with Andrea, a 12-year-old female walrus who zoo officials hope will be a successful mate for Point Defiance Zoo's male walrus, ET. Andrea was born at Marineland of the Pacific and her parents are Farouk and Priscilla.
"This switch is mutually beneficial for the animals as well as the facilities. Andrea is a good candidate for ET, who is now sexually mature, so hopefully they will produce offspring. Georgie Girl, who really likes to work a lot with her trainers, will be able to do this on a regular basis in Florida," said Zoo Director Tom Otten.
The Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma is a municipality which operates over 70 parks and recreational facilities in the greater Tacoma area including Point Defiance Park with its Zoo and Aquarium, Boathouse Complex, Fort Nisqually and Never Never Land; Northwest Trek Wildlife Park near Eatonville; Seymour Botanical Conservatory; Meadow Park Golf Course; the Ruston Way waterfront including Les Davis Pier; and more.
