MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Education Alternatives, Inc. (NASDAQ: EAIN) announced today that Dr. Robert E. Pohl III has joined the company as the California state coordinator for Tesseract(R) schools. Pohl, a resident of Los Angeles, brings to his new position a unique background of highly successful experiences in both the field of education and the business world.
For the last 10 years, Pohl has been an investment specialist for Coldwell Banker Commercial Real Estate, Los Angeles. He has overseen the sales of investment properties worth more than $200 million, and has developed real estate strategies for Dean Witter Reynolds, Foster Higgins and the Hearst Corporation.
From 1978 to 1982, Pohl was principal of St. Agnes Elementary School, San Francisco. Earlier in the 1970s, he was an instructor in the Special Education Department of Boston University, Boston; an associate editor of the Journal of Education, Boston University; an assistant to the director of special education in the Malden Public Schools, Malden, Mass.; and a teacher at Our Lady of Loretto Elementary and Junior High School, Los Angeles.
In 1974, Pohl founded Camp Christopher, a camp for severely handicapped children in Boston. Counselors at Camp Christopher helped children develop skills and also provided educational programs for parents that enabled them to keep their children at home rather than in institutions.

He has also directed a committee of that organization to develop educational programs for homeless individuals. For the last two years, he has co-chaired the Catholic Big Brothers Golf fund-raiser in Los Angeles. In addition, from 1987 to 1989 he supervised the Los Angeles Special Olympics Team.
Pohl received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Notre Dame and a master of science in education from the University of Southern California. In 1981, he received a doctorate in education from Boston University. His wife Susan is a television producer. The couple has two children: Olivia, twenty-one months, and Caitlin, six months.
