Kurdish Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani visited Turkey on Friday to attend ceremonies marking the 100th anniversary of the battle of Gallipoli, known as Canakkale Victory Day for Turks. ?The prime minster of the Kurdistan region, Nechirvan Barzani, was accompanied by Safin Dizayi, spokesman to Kurdistan Regional Government, to an event held to commemorate Canakkale,? Rudaw correspondent Rasan Ramzi said in the Turkish town of Canakkale, the Turkish word for Gallipoli. Officials from 60 countries gathered at the old battlefield with the families of former soldiers on Friday to pay respects for the estimated 130,000 troops who died in the famous battle from the First World War. The attack on Gallipolli was launched by the Allied forces in a bid to take the Ottoman Empire, as Turkey was then known, out of war and to secure a key naval route. The battle erupted as Allied troops, mostly from the UK, France, Australia and New Zealand, stormed the beach in the face of fierce resistance. The battle, which is considered one of the most costly in modern history, resulted in the deaths of over 44,000 Allied troops and 86,000 Turks. The main ceremonies were held on Saturday.
