PLUM CREEK SUPPORTS KITTITAS COUNTY FORESTLAND DESIGNATION

SEATTLE, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Plum Creek Timber Co., L.P. (NYSE: PCL) said today it supports the Kittitas County Board of Commission's designation plan for forestlands of long-term commercial significance under the Growth Management Act.
"The County Commissioners have developed a blueprint for effective growth management, particularly as it relates to forest management," said Mike Stevens, Manager of Land Use Planning for Plum Creek. "Plum Creek owns more than 140,000 acres in Kittitas County, and the company has an obvious interest in preserving and protecting viable, productive forest lands. We believe the Commissioner's plan will help achieve that important goal.
"The Commissioners also should be commended for establishing an open process of public involvement, which produced a thorough and comprehensive analysis of forestlands in the county.
"Plum Creek is also encouraged that the Commission supports continued examination of potential alternative uses of lands that are not suitable to long-term forest management," Stevens stated. "In particular, the Commission's decision not to designate the Cle Elum River Property will provide and opportunity to evaluate the feasibility of a higher and better use of that property.
"We believe that a master planned resort should be studied, and that conceivably it could provide significant environmental and economic benefits to the county," Stevens said. "During this study period, Plum Creek will continue the open and inclusive process we initiated with the formation of the Citizens Guidance Panel."
