PLUM CREEK COMPLETES TRANSACTION FOR MONTANA TIMBERLANDS; LOCAL FORESTERS HIRED TO MANAGE LAND

SEATTLE, Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Plum Creek Timber Co. L.P. (NYSE: PCL) announced today that it has completed the acquisition of 867,000 acres of western Montana timberlands from Champion International Corp. The purchase does not include Champion's Montana mills, which Stimson Lumber Co. has acquired.
"This transaction reinforces Plum Creek's long-term commitment to the state of Montana," said David D. Leland, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Plum Creek.
Plum Creek also announced that it has hired 16 foresters formerly with Champion. They will be based in Libby, Missoula, Kalispell and Columbia Falls, Mont. These employees, along with existing Plum Creek resource personnel will manage the additional timberlands in the region.
"With their working knowledge of the land, we believe these new employees will greatly complement our existing staff of foresters, and enable Plum Creek to more effectively manage our new lands," Leland said. "All Plum Creek's lands will be managed according to our Environmental Forestry Principles."
The company said that given its reduced harvest levels and the application of Environmental Forestry, its Pablo nursery will have adequate capacity to supply the seedling needs of the combined ownerships. The Plains nursery formerly owned by Champion will be closed by the end of the year.
Plum Creek is one of the largest private forestland owners in the Northwest.
