PLUG-IN 56KBPS; HT ANNOUNCES SINGLE-CARD PC/DSU 'DIGITAL MODEM'
/ADVANCE/ SIMI VALLEY, Calif., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- For PC users who want higher-speed communications than conventional modems can provide, HT Communications is announcing the PC/DSU, a plug-in communications card for transmitting at up to 56Kbps on digital phone lines. The fact that the new unit is an "unconventional" modem is transparent to the user -- except for its speed. Either leased or dial-up phone lines may be used. These will be digital (DDS) facilities rather than analog voice grade lines, but DDS lines are becoming commonplace as higher and higher data rates are demanded for LAN-to-LAN connections, multimedia, electronic document interchange, and so on. "Two trends are affecting the demand for speed," said Roger Free, HT's president. "One is that more and more traditional mainframe applications are being downsized to work on LANs. The other is that PC applications are being remotely located and therefore require more bandwidth -- applications like video imaging and desktop publishing. "Even with data compression, regular modems can't keep up, but the PC/DSU can deliver 56Kbps without compression." Also, as speeds go up, conventional modems put more and more load on the PC until it may not be able to do any other processing while the transmission is going on. The PC/DSU can free the PC for other work. The PC/DSU is priced at $795 in end-user quantities, with software. Deliveries are from stock. VAR inquiries are invited. In addition to DSUs, HT Communications offers a mix of other high-performance products for data communications, including high- speed modems (9600bps and up) and statistical multiplexers. -0- 4/5/93/1200 /CONTACT: Roger Free, president of HT Communications, 805-522-1377/
