PLHIV ON ART ON THE RISE.
The numbers of people living with HIV/ AIDS (PLHIV), who avail ART (Anti-Retroviral Treatment), have been increasing over the years. Almost 80% of PLHIV - 495 out of 627 - are on ART today. Meanwhile, in the past only those PLHIV with CD4 count of less than 200 were on ART. However, anyone detected now with the virus is immediately put on ART.
The treatment, which is offered free of cost by the government, consists of the combination of antiretroviral drugs to maximally suppress the HIV virus and to stop the progression of HIV disease, besides ART also preventing onward transmission of HIV. Meanwhile, HIV has been reported highest in the age group between 30 and 39 years.
