PLAYBOY OPENS PHONE LINES TO READERS FOR OPINIONS ON NATIONAL, PERSONAL ISSUES; MANTRACK SURVEY LINE RESULTS TO BE PUBLISHED

CHICAGO, Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Readers of Playboy are being invited to offer their views on a wide range of issues, beginning with abortion, gun control and women in combat, utilizing a new Mantrack Survey Line announced in the magazine's February issue.
The dedicated 900 number "adds a new dimension to our two-year old Mantrack marketing and public opinion polls conducted with the Roper Organization," says Michael Perlis, the publisher of Playboy and president of the Playboy Publishing Group.
"In addition to the valuable data on men's attitudes that we continue to obtain through in-depth Roper surveys, we now can take the pulse of more than 10 million Playboy readers each month on issues that hit home for men and women alike," he adds.
The Mantrack Survey Line (900-896-8722) is available to callers throughout the United States at a cost of 75 cents per minute. Each month, Playboy will pose a set of questions on a variety of topical issues, and callers to the line can respond to some or all of the queries. Phone line results will be compiled and published in future issues.
Playboy's popular Mantrack feature was created in 1992 to complement the publication's ongoing Roper surveys on men's opinions and attitudes. The feature, edited by Stephen Randall, presents timely capsule observations and commentary on men's issues, as well as guest essays by a diverse group of newsmakers and contemporary thinkers.
The February Mantrack feature looks at an increase in the number of women buying guns; a book that cites the absence of a father during childhood as a key source of feminist anger; dumb-men jokes ("How can you force a man to do sit-ups? Tape the remote control to his feet.") and a new male-oriented comic strip called "Guy Stuff." The "Guest Opinion" essay, by former Los Angeles police chief Daryl Gates, offers a compelling argument in favor of female soldiers in combat situations.
