PLAYBOY AND TCI ANNOUNCE MAJOR AFFILIATION AGREEMENT

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Playboy Entertainment Group (PEG) announced today that it has entered into its first long-term agreement with Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI). The agreement will expand the existing relationship between Playboy and TCI and its affiliated systems.
TCI, with approximately 2.1 million pay-per-view movie addressable households and 10 million basic subscribers nationwide, is the industry's largest multiple system operator. TCI has recently announced major long term commitments to both pay-per-view and digital compression, which TCI has indicated will significantly expand channel capacity available in TCI systems for premium programming such as Playboy's over the next three years.
Playboy TV is currently offered as a monthly subscription service in 1.8 million TCI cable households, including 1 million pay-per-view households. As a result of the agreement, near-term launches will occur in several TCI systems.
In a related agreement, Playboy has also contracted with TCI's Netlink division for distribution of Playboy TV to the U.S. private satellite dish market. Netlink is the largest distributor of program services to this growing direct-to-home market.
"Because TCI is America's largest cable company, we're excited about their commitment to pay-per-view and technological advancements," stated PEG President Anthony J. Lynn, "and we are pleased that Playboy will be among the multiplicity of choices that TCI offers consumers."
Playboy TV is a premium cable service currently available on a pay-per-view basis in approximately 8 million households and as a monthly subscription service in 12 million households nationwide. Last year, Playboy's pay-per-view addressability grew by 49 percent, and in the near term is expected to continue at a pace exceeding the industry norm which, according to Paul Kagan Associates Inc., is expected to rise by an average annual rate of 14 percent through 1995.
The Playboy Entertainment Group is a wholly owned subsidiary of Playboy Enterprises Inc., the international publishing and entertainment company that publishes Playboy magazine and related media. The Entertainment Group develops, produces and distributes programming for the domestic pay television, international television and worldwide home video markets. Playboy TV is the nation's third largest pay-per-view service.
