PLASTIC FILM MANUFACTURER TO LEASE FACILITY AT PORT OF TACOMA
TACOMA, Wash., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Tredegar Film Products, a maker of plastic used in disposable diapers, will lease about 85,000 square feet of a commercial building in the Port of Tacoma Commerce Center, the port announced today. The building, 2120 Milwaukee Way, will be used to manufacture the plastic film used in disposable diapers and other sanitary paper products.
The Richmond, Va.-based company will lease the facility from Northwest Building Corp., which works as a partner with the Port in development of the Commerce Center.
The multi-million-dollar manufacturing facility will employ about 35 people upon start-up but is expected to employ more than 100 workers eventually, said David Bowman, real estate manager for Tredegar. The plastic film product manufactured at the plant will be exported to Japan.
"We are very excited about this," said John Terpstra, executive director of the Port of Tacoma. "This is a very important part of what our Port is all about. It's exports, it's real, and it's going to go over our docks."
About nine months of equipment installation and building improvements will be necessary before the company will fully occupy the building. Construction is due to begin this winter.
Tredegar Film Products, a division of Tredegar Industries Inc., is the largest U.S. supplier of plastic films for disposable diapers. It supplies the absorbent sheets used in diapers manufacture by Proctor & Gamble Co. The company is a spin-off from the Ethyl Corp. and is known for its VisQueen brand plastic film.
The Port Commerce Center is a 120-acre industrial development park. Up to 20 other facilities are planned for the center over the next 50 years.
The Commerce Center currently includes a $3.2 million distribution warehouse opened in 1988 by Mitsubishi, a warehouse/distribution center for Pacific Forest Products and a $10 million cold storage facility operated by Mountain Cold Storage.
