 SANTA FE, N.M., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Plasma Technology Inc. (PTI) today said it has entered into a joint venture with Minneapolis-based defense contractor Alliant Techsystems to provide induction-coupled plasma technology that will convert energetics obtained from the demilitarization of munitions into commercial byproducts and alternative energy sources.
 PTI will provide Alliant Techsystems with the plasma generator and power source, both of which are integral elements in the munitions demilitarization process.
 John F. Serino Jr., president and chief executive officer, said the venture will provide an entry into a market estimated to comprise more than 35 million metric tons of munitions and weapons platforms with a reclamation value of between $3 billion and $5 billion.
 "We believe our unique technology coupled with our association with Alliant Techsystems will enable us to take advantage of this emerging market," said Serino.
 Alliant Techsystems recently announced the formation of a joint stock company with the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense to demilitarize surplus conventional munitions in the former Soviet state. The company also is pursuing demilitarization opportunities in other Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union as well as in the United States.
 Kenneth J. Jenson, Alliant Techsystems' executive vice president and chief operating officer, said the company's Ukrainian partners are enthusiastic about the potential energy and byproducts from demilitarization as well as other applications for PTI's technology.
 "Induction-coupled plasma technology not only would supply much needed fuel and electricity, but it also would provide an acceptable technical solution for disposal of liquid and solid rocket fuel," said Jenson.
 Serino said PTI's technology fits well with Alliant Techsystems' environmentally friendly demilitarization process, which favors the disposal of munitions through dismantling and reclamation rather than traditional methods such as open-air burning and detonation, ocean dumping and land burial.
 "Induction-coupled plasma is a pure, clean form of heat similar to the gases on the surface of the sun, which burn without combustion," said Serino. "By using PTI's plasma reactor, enormous amounts of heat are generated without oxygen, keeping the production of gases and emissions to a minimum."
 Serino said munitions demilitarization is only one of many applications for induction-coupled plasma technology.
 "It can also be applied to a broad spectrum of waste management areas, including medical waste, radioactive waste, industrial manufacturing waste and municipal solid waste," Serino said. "PTI intends to pursue actively business opportunities in these areas over the next several years."
 PTI was formed in 1989 as a result of agreements between the U.S. Department of Energy, Hobart-TAFA Technologies and Los Alamos National Laboratory to give PTI sub-licenses for the use of induction-coupled plasma technology. Since its formation, the company has refined the hardware needed to treat efficiently waste and convert it into usable materials.
 PTI's plasma generators is manufactured by Hobart-TAFA Technologies, part of the Advanced Systems Group of Hobart Brothers Co. The power supply units are manufactured by Lepel Corp., an Inductotherm Industries Co., Edgewood, N.Y., the world's leading supplier of induction heating sources.
 The Center for the Plasma Processing of Materials (CPPM) at Drexel University in Philadelphia is under subcontract to PTI for laboratory conversion verification studies of the various materials treated by PTI's technology.
 Plasma Technology Inc. provides technology and engineering to users involved in the destruction and conversion of waste into usable byproducts. The company is based in Santa Fe.
