PLANTED WATERS.

The following Eastern Sierra waters are planted with trout by the Department of Fish and Game. Directions to each locale are included. An asterisk indicates waters also privately planted with Alpers trout, the renowned hand-reared rainbow stocked at trophy sizes.

Major roadside lakes have been ice-free for weeks, however, higher and more remote locations above 8,500 feet, including the Mammoth Lakes Basin and South, Sabrina, North, Rock Creek and Virginia lakes, remain frozen (making ice-fishing a possibility) and/or have limited access due to snow. Questions regarding such waters can be directed to the region's five U.S. Forest Service anger stations - Mount Whitney (in Lone Pine), (760) 876-6200; White Mountain (Bishop), (760) 873-2501; Mammoth, (760) 924-5500; Lee Vining, (760) 647-3044; and Bridgeport, (760) 932-7070.

For updates, call the DFG's sport-fishing information line (800) 275-3474. Refer to the 1999 California Sport Fishing Regulations handbook for any special restrictions. Additional queries can be directed to the DFG office in Bishop, (760) 872-1171.
