PLANNED PARENTHOOD STATEMENT ON ORTHO AND OMAHA CLINIC

NEW YORK, June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Pamela J. Maraldo, Ph.D., president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, today issued the following statement:
"Planned Parenthood is pleased to confirm that an investigation has concluded that the incident in Omaha, Neb., where a client returned two packets of birth control pills, was a single-patient event that occurred after the pill packets left one of our reproductive health centers.
"Contrary to earlier inaccurate reports, there has been no recall of any birth control pills. The Food and Drug Administration has concluded that this incident was not associated with Ortho Pharmaceutical's manufacturing process. We have been assured that women taking Ortho Novum 1/35 and all other birth control pills should feel confident about the product.
"Planned Parenthood is the nation's oldest and largest voluntary reproductive health care provider, serving nearly 5 million women and men each year. Ensuring that our clients have access to the widest possible choice of quality contraception is an important part of what we do. Our nearly 1,000 reproductive health centers dispense approximately 13 million birth control pill cycles to American women each year.
"For 77 years, America has entrusted Planned parenthood with its reproductive health and it is a responsibility we take seriously."
Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the world's oldest and largest voluntary reproductive health care organization, is dedicated to the principle that every individual has a fundamental right to choose when or whether to have a child.
Planned Parenthood's 167 not-for-profit affiliates operate 922 clinics in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Planned Parenthood centers provide medical and educational services for nearly 5 million Americans each year, regardless of race, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or economic circumstances. Through its international program, Family Planning International Assistance, Planned parenthood helps meet the family planning needs of women and men in the developing world.
