 PIZZA HUT DELIVERS AGAIN TO BORIS YELTSIN;
 CHAIN SENT FOOD TO HIS HEADQUARTERS DURING COUP ATTEMPT
 WICHITA, Kansas, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Russian President Boris Yeltsin ventures today into the heartland of America to renew his taste for that famous "American" food -- pizza.
 A special pizza delivery will be made to Mr. Yeltsin in Wichita, home of Pizza Hut, Inc., the pizza company that delivered more than 200 pizzas through the barricades to his Parliament building headquarters in Moscow during the failed coup last August.
 After the coup attempt, Mr. Yeltsin telephoned the Moscow Pizza Hut restaurant to say, "Thanks for the support," according to Randy Barnes, president of Pizza Hut International.
 Mr. Yeltsin travels to Wichita as a guest of Senator Bob Dole following his meetings in Washington with President George Bush. The special Pizza Hut pizza delivery will take place while he visits the Greg Rau farm outside of Wichita. He will also be presented with a silver pizza pan commemorating his trip to the hometown of Pizza Hut World Headquarters.
 Pizza Hut first caused a stir in Moscow in 1990 when it opened two restaurants to introduce its citizens to the delights of U.S.-style quick-service pizza. One of the Pizza Hut restaurants is on Tverskaya Street (formerly Gorki Street), close by the Kremlin. The other, in Kutuzovski Prospect, boasts the largest Pizza Hut kitchen in the world -- its four ovens can bake more than 5,000 pizzas a day. Together they can serve 50,000 customers a week.
 The restaurants were established as a joint venture between Pizza Hut, whose parent company is PepsiCo, and the Moscow City Council. The original suggestion, according to Donald M. Kendall, head of PepsiCo's executive committee, came from Anatoly F. Dobrynin, an adviser to former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev.
 During his days as Soviet ambassador to the United States, Dobrinyn had frequently bicycled with his granddaughter to a Pizza Hut unit in Washington. Even so, five years of negotiation were needed to cement the deal. It involved a $10 million investment by the partnership and was related to an overall $3 billion reciprocal trade agreement between PepsiCo and the Soviet Union. This agreement was the largest between a single U.S. corporation and the former U.S.S.R. government.
 Today's Pizza Hut delivery to Yeltsin at the Rau farm continues a tradition of unique Pizza Hut pizza deliveries that began in July 1984. At that time, a crew of eight Pizza Hut employees delivered 200 pizzas, salads and soft drinks to a team of scientists and sailors from the Soviet Union and the United States. The team was docked in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, to mark the close of a five-week oceanographic research mission in the Bering Sea.
 A month before the research expedition began, the Soviets treated the Americans to a meal of pelmeni, a Russian dough-wrapped meat pie. When the U.S. researchers decided to return the favor at journey's end, they gave the Soviets their choice of meals.
 "Pizza" was their reply.
 Pizza Hut, Inc., is the largest pizza restaurant and delivery system in the world with more than 7,000 domestic locations and more than 1,500 additional units in 64 foreign countries. Pizza Hut, Inc., is based in Wichita, Kan., and is a subsidiary of PepsiCo, Inc.
