PITTSBURGH RENAMED 'BIG MAC CITY, USA' AT CELEBRATION HONORING 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF WORLD'S MOST POPULAR SANDWICH

PITTSBURGH, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The steel city paid tribute today to the Big Mac -- a hometown hero that made it big -- with an honor benefiting an American icon celebrating its 25th anniversary. Pittsburgh Mayor Sophie Masloff officially renamed the city to "Big Mac City, USA" at an anniversary party featuring a marching band, the "world's biggest" Big Mac cake, and local citizens singing the famous "Two-All-Beef- Patties..." jingle. In addition, the intersection at Stanwix Street and Liberty Avenue, in front of a McDonald's at the site of the party, was changed to "Big Mac Way."
Jim Delligatti, the McDonald's franchisee who created the Big Mac, was honored at today's celebration. He marketed the triple-decker sandwich -- complete with his own "special sauce" -- at his Pittsburgh- area stores in 1967 before it was introduced nationally in 1968.
"This celebration provides me an opportunity to thank my customers in Pittsburgh who have helped make the Big Mac a big sandwich," said Delligatti.
Today, the Big Mac is available at every McDonald's restaurant in 66 countries around the world. An estimated 14 billion Big Macs have been sold since its national introduction.
"There is perhaps nothing else with its roots in Pittsburgh that has enjoyed the immense worldwide popularity of the Big Mac," said Mayor Masloff. "We are proud to have played a role in its early success, and are pleased to honor Jim Delligatti and his famous creation."
"Finding another sandwich that, 25 years after its introduction, is as well-known and well-liked around the world as the Big Mac would be a tall order," said Ed Rensi, president of McDonald's, U.S.A. "That a great city like Pittsburgh would actually change its name to honor the occasion is appreciated by all of us at McDonald's."
 HOW IT ALL STARTED
Delligatti began testing the sandwich in 1967 as a way to attract more adult customers to his restaurant in Uniontown, Pa., selling it for 49 cents.
In just a few short weeks, the impact was felt: the Big Mac accounted for a significant share of his restaurant's total sales, and had increased overall restaurant sales by double-digit percentages. He then introduced the Big Mac at three of his other McDonald's restaurants in the Pittsburgh area.
Word about the local success of the Big Mac spread to McDonald's home office in Chicago. The decision was made to expand the sandwich into other test markets. After sales of the Big Mac continued to grow, it was quickly rolled out to every U.S. restaurant in 1968, and today is sold at every McDonald's restaurant around the world.
McDonald's is the leading foodservice retailer in the global consumer marketplace, with more than 13,000 restaurants in 66 countries. About eighty percent of McDonald's restaurant businesses are locally owned and operated by independent entrepreneurs.
