PITT-DES MOINES, INC. REPORTS INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY AT SITE OF POSTAL SERVICE ACCIDENT

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Pitt-Des Moines, Inc. (AMEX: PDM) (PDM) today reported investigations are underway to determine the cause of Wednesday's accident in downtown Chicago at the construction site for a new U.S. Postal Service facility. Two people were killed; five were injured.
PDM, the steel fabricator and erector of the building, reported one employee was killed while working on a structural steel beam in the area where the collapse occurred. A second ironworker, employed by a subcontractor, later died from injuries suffered in the incident. Some of the injured were reported to be employees of PDM's subcontractor.
"We are fully supporting the investigations now underway to determine the cause of the accident," said William W. McKee, president and CEO of PDM. "Our primary concern is for the continuing safety of our people and the jobsite."
Some published reports on the incident have indicated PDM was previously cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for alleged safety violations at the project site. McKee said the company is contesting the citations. No penalties have been assessed and no fines paid.
PDM said the safety claims alleged by OSHA are in no way related to Wednesday's incident at the construction site.
Additional facts will be released as they become available, the company stated.
PDM is a diversified engineering and construction company that also processes and distributes a broad range of carbon steel products. PDM operates within the Engineered Construction Division, the Steel Construction Division, the Steel Service Centers and CVI, Inc. PDM has sales offices and plant facilities situated primarily in the United States.
