PIT BULL ATTACKS 3-YEAR-OLD BOY.

Byline: Greg Botonis Staff Writer

PALMDALE - A pit bull mauled a 3-year-old boy, biting the toddler on his head and face, and was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy, officials said Wednesday.

Henry Echoes, 3, was bitten about 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, outside his home in the 1100 block of East Avenue R-3, officials said. He was airlifted to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, where he was listed in good condition.

Authorities said the dog was running loose in the neighborhood at the time of the attack.

``There may be criminal liability for the animal getting out and causing injury,'' said Lt. Terry Eversol of the Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control Department.

Eversol said his department was investigating whether they had ever received previous complaints about the dog running loose.

After the dog attacked the child, neighbors managed to corral it in the back yard of a nearby home and called authorities.

When authorities arrived, the dog charged animal control officers and deputies who responded to the call, and Deputy John Donaldson shot and killed the dog with a single shotgun blast.

Sheriff's deputies located the dog's home down the street and authorities impounded two other pit bulls and a Queensland heeler from the back yard. The owners, whose names were not released, were not at home at the time.

Animal control officials said they would inspect the property to ensure the animals won't be able to get out before returning the impounded dogs.
