 PIONEER SUCCEEDS IN DEVELOPING HIGH SENSITIVE
 ORGANIC DYE MEDIUM FOR OPTICAL VIDEO RECORDING
 TOKYO, July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Pioneer Electronic Corporation (NYSE: PIO) today announced that its Corporate Research and Development Laboratory succeeded in developing a new write-once optical recording organic dye medium which will be a breakthrough for recordable laser discs compatible with current laser disc (LD) format.
 The newly developed optical recording medium features a number of advantages: high sensitivity -- respondable to laser beam of 780 nano- meter wavelength, a wavelength used with conventional laser disc (LD) and CD players -- no physical transformation during the recording process, low production cost with thin-films production by the spin coating process, etc.
 This medium can be applied to optical discs for analog FM modulated video signal recording, which is the method used with the conventional laser discs.
 Currently, optical discs for video recording media include magneto- optical discs which are used with our rewritable videodisc recorder, VDR-V100, available in the industrial markets in Japan and the U.S. Regarding write-once type media for video recording, only one method is established in the industry utilizing an organic dye that responds to Argon gas laser. However, because this method involves huge equipment and an exclusive pickup for playback and recording, it is mainly used for industrial/commercial applications.
 In the field of digital recording, an application of thin films of organic dye, which is also a write-once-type organic medium, is already available in the market as recordable CDs.
 During the process of recording on optical discs by laser beam, the conventional dye medium transforms itself and creates sub-micron dents, melts and metormophoses in the recording layer. This process of physical transformation leads to increased jitters of played-back signals due to irregularity of the transformed parts, which is not a problem with digital audio recording. However, these jitters cause blurs and degraded picture quality in the case of analog FM modulated video recording.
 In addition to this, the conventional dye medium requires a comparatively high laser power output to cause favorable physical transformation in the recording layer. In analog FM modulated video recording, even higher laser output power is required because linear velocity is 10 to 20 times faster than that of CD's or digital audio recording.
 In short, ideal material for video recording must clear such requirements as low-jitters, high-sensitivity (or low laser output power). The conventional technology for organic dye medium has not been able to create such an ideal material so far.
 Based on special organic dye material developed by the Tsukuba Research Laboratories of Toyo Ink Mfg. Co., Ltd., Pioneer Corporate Research and Development Laboratory and Toyo Ink have jointly solved these problems by developing a high sensitive material-respondable to laser beam of 780 nano-meter wavelength.
 Pioneer has developed a pre-grooved optical disc made of polycarbonate with a recording layer of the newly developed organic dye produced by spin coating process, and a reflect layer and a protection layer. Pioneer applied recording and playback tests to this disc using an optical pick-up which is commonly built in with the recordable CD players.
 During the tests, our laboratory achieved a jitter below 5 nano- seconds, which is a feasible level for the practical use of the FM modulated video recording, and picture quality comparable to that of conventional laser discs (LDs).
 Pioneer believes that this successful result will pave the way for future development of consumer recordable laser discs and recorders/players compatible with current LD format, utilizing the newly-developed high sensitive organic dye medium for video recording by the ordinary optical pick-ups which are currently used with the LD and CD players.
 Pioneer will report these technological achievements at the Institute of Television Engineers of Japan on July 28, 1992.
