HOUSTON, Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Pioneer Companies, Inc. (Nasdaq-NNM: PIONA) announced today that it has completed the acquisition of Kemira Water Treatment, Inc., a subsidiary of Kemira Oy of Finland. The acquired business has been combined with Imperial West Chemical Co., an existing subsidiary of Pioneer, and the combined entity will operate as Kemwater North America Company. Kemwater North America will supply a full range of specialty and commodity inorganic coagulants and technical service to the water treatment market in most of North America and the Caribbean.

Through license and product supply agreements, Kemwater North America will have access to Kemira Oy's advanced water treatment technology and product line. Kemwater North America's Savannah, Georgia plant will continue to produce polyaluminum chloride, which is sold under the PAX trademark, as well as aluminum sulfate, sodium aluminate and ferric sulfate, and the plant will be adding ferric chloride capacity. Kemwater North America's western operations, with facilities in Spokane, Washington; Albany, Oregon; and Antioch, Pittsburg and Mojave, California, will produce PAX as well as existing product lines, which consist of ferric and ferrous chloride and aluminum sulfate.

"We are very excited about the future of the North American water treatment market, and the opportunity to combine Kemira Oy's existing and future technological advances and its southeastern sales base with Imperial West's strong leadership in western markets will afford Kemwater North America a prime position in potable water, waste water and industrial water treatment applications," said Richard Kellogg, Pioneer's President. "We look forward to applying Kemira Oy's expertise to the American marketplace as we serve an important role in providing clean water to the people and environment of North America."
