PILOT PRODUCTION BEGINS FOR RHD FORD PROBE

FLAT ROCK, Mich., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The first 10 Ford Probe right-hand-drive vehicles will be produced today for export to the United Kingdom, as pilot production begins at AutoAlliance International.
"The Ford Probe is our biggest success as an export to Europe and is the best-selling North American-built product in Europe so far this year," said John Keilly, general marketing manager, Ford North American Export Sales. "We expect the shipment of the right-hand-drive Probe to dramatically increase our export sales in Europe."
In 1992, the company exported 6,553 left-hand-drive Ford Probes to Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Taiwan and Japan. Ford exported 5,996 Probes in the first six months of this year alone, up 32.7 percent over the same period in 1992, and launched the Probe in Spain in early 1993.
Full production for the right-hand-drive Ford Probe is scheduled for this November for the United Kingdom, and early 1994 for Japan.
"We believe our North American-built vehicles will provide customers around the world with a greater range of Ford products from which to choose," said Mr. Keilly. "The Ford Probe provides a niche product in the sport-specialty market segment which complements the Ford of Europe model line-up."
The Probe also will be the first of several right-hand-drive Ford products to be exported to Japan -- including the Ford Mondeo from Europe in spring 1994, and Ford Taurus and Ford Explorer in the mid-90s.
