PILGRIM STATION RETURNS TO OPERATION AFTER NINTH REFUELING OUTAGE

PLYMOUTH, Mass., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- On Friday, May 28 at 1:21 a.m., Pilgrim was restarted. The plant returned to the grid on Sunday, May 30th, following a 57-day refueling outage. During the outage, 140 fuel bundles, about 1/3 of the reactors's core, were replaced. Other work completed during the outage includes maintenance, testing, and inspections which cannot be done during plant operation. On the non-nuclear side of the plant, a major turbine overhaul was completed.
On Monday evening, May 31st at 7:20 p.m., a turbine load reject resulted in an automatic plant shut-down.
The shut-down occurred when the plant was at 25 percent power, and in the process of transferring plant systems to internal electrical power sources. During plant outages, Pilgrim Station uses electricity from the New England power grid.
The reason for the plant trip is under investigation. Restart is expected later this week.
