PILE ON THE PASTA AT EARTH SUNDAY IN THE PARK'S PASTA CHALLENGE

PHILADELPHIA, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Philadelphia promises to play paradise to pasta aficionados Sunday, May 2, when the first-ever Pasta Challenge is staged at Memorial Hall.
Part of Philadelphia's 4th annual Earth SunDay in the Park celebration, the Pasta Challenge will attract 19 top local restaurants competing for the "Best Pasta" honors.
This event, co-sponsored by the Greater Philadelphia Restaurant & Purveyor Association, Rosa Food Products Company, San Pellegrino mineral water and the Philadelphia Area Earth Day '93 Coalition, is scheduled to take place from noon to 5 p.m.
In order to help cover the costs associated with Earth SunDay, the Pasta Challenge was added to the list of activities. Pasta fits in with an Earth SunDay coalition pledge to provide good, healthy food at the celebration. The idea for this event originated in Providence, R.I., where they have hosted annual Pasta Challenges since the early 1980s.
Adult admission of $5 and $3 for children under 12, will enable visitors to Earth SunDay to enter the Pasta Challenge area and to sample oodles of noodles and slews of seductive sauces from the following restaurants:
Astral Plane; Continental 500; Down Home Grill; D'Angelo's Summit Restaurant and Caterers; Felicia's; Hadley's at the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel; Jack's Firehouse; La Vigna; Magnolia Cafe; Mary's Restaurant; Montserrat; North Star Bar; Old Brauhaus; Panorama Ristorante; Rizzo's Restaurant; Samuel Adams Brew House; Sansom Street Oyster House; Spaghetti Warehouse; and The Dining Car.
San Pellegrino mineral water will be on sale for $2 in a recycled plastic Earth SunDay souvenir cup. Refills are only $1. Outside of the Pasta Challenge area, Elliott's Amazing Juices and Bassett's Ice Cream will be for sale.
In addition to the restaurants begin judged by the public, a panel of celebrity judges will have their say. Celebrities invited include: Mayor Ed Rendell and Midge Rendell; all City Council members; WXPN's Kathy O'Connell; Channel 17's Dorie Lenz; WMMR's Pierre Robert; Tug McGraw; the Philadelphia Inquirer's Elaine Tait and Marilynn Marter; and Philadelphia's Recycling Director Alfred Dezzi and his wife Eleanor.
Earth SunDay in the Park '93 is a free, rain or shine event that is designed for people of all ages. Every 30 minutes, there will be a SEPTA shuttle bus running from 30th Street Station to Memorial Hall and back to 30th Street Station. Visitors are encouraged to take public transporation, ride bikes or walk to the celebration.
The goal of Earth SunDay in the Park is to bring together all segments of the community to celebrate the earth, explore environmental issues, find ways to live in greater harmony with the earth, and to be a catalyst for ongoing action to improve the health of the Philadelphia area and the planet.
