 PIERRE AND WAGNER ELECTED TO OLD KENT BOARD OF DIRECTORS
 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- John C. Canepa,


chairman of the board of Old Kent Financial Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: OKEN), announced that Percy A. Pierre, vice president of Michigan State University, and David J. Wagner, president of Old Kent Bank and Trust Company, have been elected to the board of directors of the multi-bank holding company headquartered in Grand Rapids.
 Pierre is vice president for research and graduate studies and professor of electrical engineering at Michigan State University. In this capacity, he has oversight responsibility for $137 million in research and over 6,000 graduate students. Prior to assuming his current position in 1990, Dr. Pierre's previous administrative positions included dean of the School of Engineering, Howard University (1971- 1977); assistant secretary of the Army for Research, Development and Acquisition for the Department of the Army (1977-1981); and president of Prairie View A&M University (1983-1989).
 Dr. Pierre received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Notre Dame, his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and post-doctoral studies at the University of Michigan. He has received honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was a White House Fellow and received the Distinguished Service Medal from the U.S. Army.
 Dr. Pierre serves on numerous governing boards including CMS Energy, The Aerospace Corporation, The Center for Naval Analysis, The University of Notre Dame, and The National Commission on Cooperative Education.
 Also appointed to the board of directors is Wagner, president and chief executive officer of Old Kent Bank and Trust Company and executive vice president of Old Kent Financial Corporation.
 Wagner joined Old Kent in January 1977. In 1984 Wagner was appointed president of Old Kent Bank - Grand Haven. He was appointed president and board member of Old Kent Bank and Trust in November 1986, and was assigned the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in December 1989.
 Wagner received his B.A. and M.B.A. degrees from Indiana University. He serves on the governing boards of Blodgett Memorial Medical Center, United Way of Kent County, YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, Grand Rapids Foundation, Grand Valley Foundation and Autocam.
 Old Kent Financial Corporation has assets of $9.0 billion and total equity of $651 million as of March 31, 1992. Old Kent is a bank holding company headquartered in Grand Rapids, with 15 affiliate banks and 190 offices throughout Michigan and one affiliate bank with 13 offices in Illinois.
