PIER 1 IMPORTS PRESENTS ITS' LARGEST CHECK EVER TO U.S. COMMITTEE FOR UNICEF; MORE THAN $800,000 RAISED THROUGH SALE OF UNICEF GREETING CARDS

FORT WORTH, May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- NBC Today anchor Katie Couric, the U.S. Committee for UNICEF's 1992 National UNICEF Chair, accepted a check for $806,463 to help combat childhood disease and hunger around the world from Pier 1 Imports President Marvin Girouard. Couric accepted the check for the U.S. Committee for UNICEF at its annual meeting in New York.
Pier 1 annually donates the proceeds from its sales of greeting cards to UNICEF, and the 1993 check is the largest donation Pier 1 has ever made to the U.S. Committee for UNICEF. In 1992, the card sales raised more than $785,000, passed directly to the U.S. Committee for UNICEF without profit to Pier 1. Greeting card sales in Pier 1 stores have generated nearly $4.2 million for UNICEF over the last eight years.
"UNICEF actively works to improve the health and well-being of children around the world," Girouard said," and Pier 1 Imports is proud to be a major participant in helping to advance the objectives of this worthy cause." Girouard is an active member of the National Board of Directors of the U.S. Committee for UNICEF.
"On behalf of U.S. Committee for UNICEF, I am pleased to accept this generous contribution for one of the most successful fund-raising efforts to help the children of the world," Couric said.
Created in 1946 to help children in post-war Europe and China, UNICEF today is perhaps the best-known and most well-respected organization dealing with the problems of children in developing countries.
Through an in-store UNICEF card-selling program developed by Girouard, Pier 1 has sold more than 3 billion UNICEF greeting cards since the program began in 1985. UNICEF provides a variety of health care, nutrition, education, water and sanitation, and emergency assistance to millions of children and women throughout the developing world.
Headquartered in Fort Worth, Pier 1 Imports is the nation's leading specialty retailer of decorative home furnishings and related items with over 600 stores in the Untied States and Canada.
