PICTURETEL ANNOUNCES ACQUISITION OF VIDEOCONFERENCE SCHEDULING, RESERVATION, ACCOUNTING & NETWORK MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE LEADER KA TELETECH

DANVERS, Mass., Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- PictureTel Corporation (NASDAQ: PCTL) today announced it has acquired substantially all of the assets of Baltimore-based KA Teletech Corporation, the leading developer of scheduling, reservation, accounting and network management software for global videoconferencing systems and networks. The purchase includes rights to the company's premier product, the Teleconferencing Software System (TCSS), a videoconferencing scheduling, reservation and account management solution in use today by major organizations worldwide.
Under terms of the acquisition, all KA Teletech principals will become employees of PictureTel and will relocate to Danvers. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Recent announcements, like multipoint cascading and the expansion of the IMX inverse multiplexer family, demonstrate PictureTel's commitment to developing enterprise-wide network solutions. The challenge is to help our customers' effectively manage their increasingly complex global networks. These networks are often comprised of hundreds of components, including videoconferencing systems and cascaded multipoint bridges." said James S. Idelson, director of PictureTel's network systems business line. "The purchase of KA Teletech, the leader in videoconference network scheduling, reservation, accounting and network management, significantly strengthens PictureTel's network management solution, a key requirement in today's rapidly expanding videoconferencing market."
"We are pleased to be joining the world leader in dial-up videoconferencing," said Greg Allen, former president of KA Teletech. "TCSS customers will benefit from PictureTel's superior worldwide service and support. PictureTel's commitment to invest in an overall global network management solution is a key reason for joining with PictureTel."
Currently, the TCSS scheduling system is used by a wide range of organizations including: VISA International, Xerox Corporation, U.S. Department of Defense, and Bell Northern Research. The software based scheduler replaces manual methods previously used to manage network resources. TCSS also can control most major brands of multipoint bridges and inverse multiplexers, including PictureTel's M-8000(TM).
"Videoconferencing in the 1990s is characterized by large global networks. TCSS was designed to support an organization's scheduling and management requirements in this challenging environment," Idelson said. "PictureTel plans to use TCSS as a technology platform on which to build other essential network management tools. It is part of our ongoing commitment to invest in global network solutions."
PictureTel Corporation, headquartered in Danvers, develops, manufactures and markets a full range of visual telecommunications solutions that are "Redefining the Way the World Meets(TM)."
