PICK OF THE DAY.

AS IF finding the perfect actors to form a new Emmerdale family is not tough enough for the judges of Soapstars (ITV1, 6pm), the panel now has to wheedle out the ideal mutt from a plethora of hopeful hounds. In Search for a Dogstar, the experts have to reduce the choice to two with viewers making the ultimate casting decision.

Despite Downing Street's refusal to take part in the making of The Real Cherie Blair (C4, 8.20pm), the researchers managed to persuade some friends, relatives and former colleagues to talk about the woman behind the public face of the Prime Minister's wife. Her many roles include human rights lawyer, busy mother of four and patron of several charities, although she seems to prefer life outside the limelight when not accompanying her husband on official duties.

When unenthusiastic teacher Alan Steadman returns from a six week walking holiday in Scotland he is surprised to find his mundane life has been turned upside down. His credit cards have been cancelled, his bank accounts closed and his house emptied and sold. He is soon to learn that all computer records of him have been wiped and he no longer, technically, exists.

Cold Feet's Robert Bathurst stars as the dull history teacher in this one-off romantic comedy drama, Goodbye Mr Steadman (ITV1, 9.20pm).

Thought to be killed in a freak accident involving a stag, he seeks the help of wacky colleague Gina, played by Caroline Quentin, an art teacher and single mother with a soft spot for the supposedly dead man, to help reclaim his life.

With Lenny Henry as Alan's workmate and John Gordon-Sinclair as his dodgy solicitor, this farcical tale has a strong script with plenty of funny lines.
