Her most recent TV hit, dinnerladies, showed Wood at the pinnacle of her writing powers as it managed to be both hilariously funny but very warm and inoffensive - and yet it didn't lack bite. It was comedy for the people and the huge audiences it pulled in (which grew and grew as the second series unfolded) displayed just how much this sort of writing is appreciated on the few occasions it is seen on TV these days. This evening we are bound to be royally entertained as Victoria Wood appears on Parkinson (BBC1, 9.30pm) promising to do a turn on the piano performing some of her favourite comic songs as well as chatting about her varied career in stand-up, on TV and working for the Comic Relief charity.
