PICK OF THE DAY; Scotland v Argentina Sky Sports 1, 7.30pm.

Byline: James Milton

TERRY BUTCHER is still hurting, writes James Milton.

And when a man as tough as Terry Butcher is hurting, the whole nation should be hurting.

What is the cause of Terry's pain, I hear you ask? I'll tell you what - there's a swarthy little ghost at the Butcher banquet; a stocky, bushyhaired figure ready to rain on Terry's parade.

Yes, Diego Maradona has landed in Glasgow, reawakening memories of his Hand of God skulduggery in the 1986 World Cup.

"I'll never forgive him," Butcher, now Scotland's assistant manager, admitted through gritted teeth at a press conference this week.

"I think I'm 4-1 to get a red card in the tunnel," he continued. "It would be the fist of Terry Butcher rather than the Hand of God!"

I don't know which of the two I'd prefer to be smote by, in the Old Testament vernacular.

The Hand of God famously smote the Phillistines, the children of Canaan and Sihon, King of the Amorites, as well as destroying the sinful cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

But I reckon the fist of Terry Butcher could do some pretty serious damage too.

Anyway, the mouth of Terry Butcher has been reminiscing about the end of that infamous game in 1986.

"I was selected for the drugs test and ended up in a room with Maradona and two of his pals. Our World Cup was over and they were celebrating."

I'm guessing the medical staff in charge of the drugs samples weren't the only ones taking the piss.
