PIC 'N PAY SHOES WILL SPONSOR DALE JARRETT BUSCH GRAND NATIONAL EFFORT

DARLINGTON, S.C., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Dale Jarrett, 1993 winner of the Daytona 500 and one of only two of the original competitors still racing in the Busch Grand National Series, today introduced a new sponsor for his BGN race team with the announcement of backing from Pic 'N Pay Stores, Inc. of Charlotte, N.C.
"We're very excited about bringing a new sponsor into the Busch Grand National Series," Jarrett said. "We feel like we have a lot to offer a sponsor such as Pic 'N Pay Stores. Every car sponsor wants to be associated with a winning race team and DAJ Racing has a proven record of winning. While we weren't successful in doing that last year, we feel like the Pic 'N Pay support will give us what we need to get back to the front and win races in 1993."
Having competed in the series since its inception (along with BGN regular Tommy Houston), Jarrett says he feels the team will be back to the level of 1991 when he won three races and had eight top five and nine top 10 finishes. He thinks the 1993 version of the team owned by Conover, N.C. trucking company owner Horace Isenhower will be better than ever. "I feel like we're a better race team. We've got new cars built by Billy Hess and new Chevy V-6 engines. And, quite frankly, the support of Pic 'N Pay Shoes will allow us to put first-class equipment on the track and that's what it takes to win on this circuit."
Pic 'N Pay Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Shepard expressed his thanks to the dedication and efforts of more than 4,000 Pic 'N Pay associates which enabled them to "become associated with the Busch Grand National Series and, in particular, Dale Jarrett."
"We have investigated sponsorships in the past, but have never been presented with such an outstanding opportunity," Shepard said. "It is important to our associates and customers that we `do things right' and I cannot think of any better partnership for Pic 'N Pay."
Shepard said the reaction to the sponsorship from Pic 'N Pay associates had been "overwhelming. Retailing and racing share common characteristics in that winning is measured by a team's ability to coordinate its activity toward the achievement of goals, whether it be satisfying customers or finishing number one on the track," he added.
The "new look" Pic 'N Pay Chevy Lumina Jarrett will be driving will also sport his original BGN car number, No. 32. He competed with the number 18 in 1992 in deference to a "look alike" request by Interstate Batteries, sponsor of his Winston Cup team owned by Joe Gibbs. Jarrett will also retain associate sponsorship from Shell Oil Company of Houston, Texas.
"I'm really happy to get back to the old car number," he noted. "It's been my number since Jimmy Newsome and Andy Petree and I started. It's sentimental for Horace Isenhower, too," Jarrett added.
Jarrett will fly the Pic 'N Pay Shoes colors in ten Busch Grand National events this year, including an appearance at the track where he began his career. The hometown hero will receive a special $25,000 bonus prior to the start of the Mountain Dew 400 at Hickory Motor Speedway. April 10 has been designated "Dale Jarrett Day" in Hickory and state and local officials will participate in pre-race ceremonies to recognize Jarrett's accomplishments.
In addition to competing in the Mark III Vans 200 this weekend and the Hickory event, Jarrett will also enter both events at Bristol International Raceway; both events at Charlotte Motor Speedway; and will compete in one event each at Dover, Talladega and Rockingham before capping the season again at Hickory in the season-ending Granger Select 500.
