PIA and OSHA form alliance. (Industry News).

The Printing Industries of America (PIA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) entered into an agreement, to establish a collaborative relationship to share best practices and technical knowledge on ergonomics to foster prevention of injuries and illnesses in the printing and graphic arts industries. This agreement is the first alliance OSHA has entered into with an industry to target ergonomic safety training and awareness, according to PIA. Also included in the agreement are the Screenprinting and Graphic Imaging Association International and the Envelope Manufacturers Association.

Under the alliance, the partners will work together to develop and disseminate best practices information on ergonomics at conferences, including the national print show, GraphExpo, in Chicago, Oct. 6-9. Also, partners will make information available in print and on their web sites. Member companies to the participating organizations will also be encouraged to participate in OSHA cooperative programs such as Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program. (SHARP), according to OSHA.

In addition, alliance members will promote the national dialogue on workplace safety and health through joint outreach efforts, sharing data that supports solutions to ergonomic hazards and convening and participating in forums and round table discussions to identify innovative solutions to ergonomic issues in the printing and graphic arts industry. Participants also will develop and deliver training and education programs to help the industry eliminate or reduce ergonomic hazards.

The alliance has a one-year term and can be automatically renewed annually, according to OSHA.
