 COMBINING LASER AND FIBER OPTICS
 SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Photon Imaging Corp. has been awarded a patent by the U.S. Patent Office for an electronic printing technology, called Laserfan (TM), that makes it possible to produce high resolution pictures and other images with desktop laser printers at low cost, by combining laser and fiber optics technologies.
 The Laserfan technology which has resulted in the newly issued patent (No. 5,155,790), acts as a bridge for integrating super-radiant light emitting diodes, lasers, and fiber optics in inexpensive desktop printers.
 In operation, the Laserfan produces high-resolution printing through a fiber optic array network (FAN) containing 24 stacked rows of 6,400 glass fibers. Because the specially arranged FAN preserves the angle and focus of a laser printer's light source (which has been a costly problem for the industry), it produces high-resolution images more easily and consistently than conventional desktop printers.
 The Laserfan development now makes it possible to provide true high- resolution printing at mass-market prices, according to Kenneth Sherman, president of Photon Imaging Corp. A printer equipped with Laserfan is expected to cost under $3,000, compared to comparable high-resolution desktop printers which today cost $25,000, Mr. Sherman said.
 Photon Imaging is holding discussions concerning the new Laserfan printer with potential licenses and strategic partners in the United States and other countries.
 The patented electronic fiber optic scanning process passes multiple beams of light, one light beam for each row, through extremely thin glass fibers. Each light beam is electronically addressed individually and simultaneously during Laserfan's high-speed printing process, producing a high-resolution output equalling the limit of electrophotography (900-1,200 dots per inch).
 Laserfan is expected to be used in a wide range of applications in desktop publishing for commercial and home use at low-cost, and should significantly broaden the use of desktop publishing.
 The cost efficiencies of Laserfan have enormous potential in the marketplace, according to noted industry authority David R. Spencer, president of Spencer & Associates, who said, "The Photon Imaging approach offers the promise of cost performance benefits for higher resolution and larger format laser printers."
