PHOENIX LASER SYSTEMS SHIPS SURGICAL WORKSTATION TO ADDITIONAL SITE FOR ANIMAL AND CLINICAL TRIALS

FREMONT, Calif., May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Phoenix Laser Systems Inc. (AMEX: PXS) today announced that it has shipped a Phoenix Model 1000 Ophthalmic Surgical Workstation to North American Science Associates (NAmSA) in Irvine, Calif., for use in animal and clinical studies of laser corneal refractive surgery (corneal sculpting). The workstation shipped to NAmSA is the second U.S. system to incorporate Phoenix's new laser system and fully functional tracking system for following the motions of the eye during treatment. The configuration of this system is equivalent to the system currently being tested by Dr. James Rowsey at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla.
Results recently released by Rowsey's group in South Florida using a Phoenix workstation demonstrated positive refractive changes in rabbit corneas that were treated intrastromally. The South Florida studies demonstrated refractive changes of 2 to 4.5 diopters of myopic correction, which did not regress over the three-to-four-week post-operative follow-up period.
Phoenix Laser Systems Inc. is a developer of integrated laser workstations primarily for use by the medical community. The company's initial efforts have been focused on the design, development and testing of its first product, the Phoenix Ophthalmic Laser Workstation. The company's technology permits surgery designed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, as well as a large number of eye disorders which are untreatable or only partially treatable with current technology.
