SAN FRANCISCO, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Phoenix Laser Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: PXLS) announced today that they have acquired the rights to Patent No. 4,309,998, entitled "Process and Apparatus for Ophthalmic Surgery" from the inventor, Daniele Aron-Rosa, M.D. The 1982 patent covers high power density, short-pulse, surgical lasers using photodisruptive processes, with a neodymium doped solid state laser. This is the basic patent covering the use of picosecond lasers in ophthalmology. In addition, Dr. Aron-Rosa, who is a member of Phoenix' Advisory Board, will shortly be receiving a Phoenix ophthalmic laser workstation for use in clinical trials.

In addition, the acquisition of Dr. Aron-Rosa's patent broadens Phoenix' technology base and opens the opportunity for Phoenix to expand their clinical applications to a number of procedures which involve the use of picosecond lasers."
Phoenix Laser Systems Inc. is a developer of integrated laser workstations primarily for use by the medical community. The company's initial efforts have been focused on the design, development and testing of its first product, the Phoenix Opthalmic Laser Workstation. The company's technology permits surgery designed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, as well as a large number of eye disorders which are untreatable or only partially treatable with current technology.
