PHOENIX LASER SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES DR. JOHN W. WARNER
 NAMED AS A CONSULTANT
SAN FRANCISCO, May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Phoenix Laser Systems Inc. (AMEX: PNX) today announced that Dr. John W. Warner, formerly CEO and co-founder of Taunton Technologies Inc., has joined the company as a consultant. Warner will assume the duties of acting president of Phoenix Laser Technologies Inc., a subsidiary which develops and manufactures the Phoenix Ophthalmic Laser Workstation, a fully integrated multi-functional laser surgery system for broad ophthalmic applications.
Warner's development team at Taunton was responsible for much of the early technology development and medical research in the promising field of laser refractive surgery. Prior to the merger with VISX Inc., Taunton Technologies was one of three excimer laser companies developing medical systems to perform laser refractive surgical techniques on the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and other common vision problems.
Joann R. Schulz, president and chief operating officer stated, "We are delighted to have John Warner join the Phoenix staff. Dr. Warner and I worked together for several years when I was a consultant to Taunton. He will bring strong technical and development skills to our program, and he will be invaluable in our goal to introduce the Phoenix workstation to the market in the near future."
The Phoenix Ophthalmic Laser Workstation has already been approved for posterior capsulotomy procedures. FDA approval for photocoagulation, iridotomy, iridectomy, spot or focal coagulation of the iris, and spot or focal coagulation of the sclera are currently pending.
The long-term goal of the company is to obtain approval for refractive surgery and other new surgical procedures with very large markets in the United States and abroad.
Phoenix Laser Systems Inc. is a developer of integrated laser workstations primarily for use by the medical community. The company's initial efforts have been focused on the design, development and testing of its first product, the Phoenix Opthalmic Laser Workstation. The company's technology permits surgery designed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, as well as a large number of eye disorders which are untreatable or only partially treatable with current technology.
