PHOENIX LASER SYSTEMS ACQUIRES REFRACTIVE LASER RESEARCH GROUP

FREMONT, Calif., May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Phoenix Laser Systems Inc. (AMEX: PXS) today announced that Phoenix has acquired, for stock in Phoenix, a majority interest in Refractive Laser Research Inc. (RLR), based in San Antonio, Texas, founded by Dr. John Taboada and Dr. Robert Poirer. RLR has developed a novel optically coupled laser probe and method of highly localized photodisruption for photorefractive surgery of the cornea ("corneal sculpting"). The hand-held probe contacts the surface of the cornea and delivers 1064 Nm YAG laser pulses with a spot size of less than five microns. Preliminary results in rabbit eyes, conducted by RLR indicate that significant permanent changes (up to 10 diopters of change in refractive power have been observed five months after treatment) can be achieved with an exceptionally small amount of tissue modification. With the closing of the acquisition of RLR, Phoenix has made an offer to a group of certain Hong Kong shareholders to acquire additional shares of Phoenix stock to allow them to maintain their percentage ownership.
Phoenix President Joann Schulz stated, "We are pleased to have completed the acquisition of the Refractive Laser Research and Development Program based in San Antonio. We feel that the hand-held probe for intrastromal corneal sculpting developed by RLR will complement the more sophisticated 'hands-free' tracking technology developed by Phoenix and will give us significantly wider market opportunities. In addition, RLR has excellent patent coverage for the use of hand-held laser delivery systems, which combined with Phoenix's patents will give the company a very broad proprietary position."
Phoenix Laser Systems Inc. is a developer of integrated laser workstations primarily for use by the medical community. The company's initial efforts have been focused on the design, development and testing of its first product, the Phoenix Ophthalmic Laser Workstation. The company's technology permits surgery designed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, as well as a large number of eye disorders which are untreatable or only partially treatable with current technology.
