PHILLIPS PUBLISHING ACQUIRES U.K. SUBSIDIARY AND U.S.-BASED NEWSLETTER FROM OMNICOM, INC. POTOMAC, Md., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Phillips Publishing, Inc., has acquired a United Kingdom-based subsidiary from Omnicom, Inc., as well as Open Systems Communication, a U.S.-based newsletter. The acquisition was announced jointly today by Thomas C. Thompson, executive vice president of Phillips Publishing, and Hal Folts, president of Omnicom, Inc. Omnicom, Inc., located in Vienna, Va., was founded by Folts in 1982 to supply essential Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) education and training to users and vendors in industry and government. Omnicom International, Ltd., a subsidiary based near London, was established in 1987 to serve the European market. "Open systems" can be defined as the effort to enable disparate computer systems to communicate -- or "interoperate." Open Systems Communication is a monthly newsletter launched by Omnicom, Inc., in 1982 to cover the growing open systems marketplace. Phillips Publishing plans to merge its 2-year-old Open Systems Report into Open Systems Communication next month while increasing the frequency from monthly to biweekly. In addition, Phillips Publishing has acquired the U.K. subsidiary, Omnicom International, Ltd., which produces open systems information products for the European marketplace while also serving as the marketing arm for Omnicom, Inc., in Europe. Managing Director Roger J. Gibbons and the U.K. staff have joined the Phillips Publishing team. The agreement also provides for a comprehensive co-marketing arrangement between Phillips Publishing and Omnicom, Inc., according to PPI's Chris Scotton, vice president and group publisher of the Data Communications Group. "Since 1982, Omnicom has set the industry standard for open systems education and training through its newsletter, training seminars and videos, document service and technical support," Scotton said. "Phillips Publishing's acquisition of Omnicom International and the co-marketing partnership with Omnicom, Inc., will provide the open systems marketplace with an unparalleled information source." Omnicom President Folts said: "Phillips Publishing's resources and marketing expertise, combined with Omnicom's excellent products and reputation, create a powerful combination to serve the information needs of data communications executives." One of the largest newsletter publishers in the country, Phillips Publishing publishes more than 50 business and consumer newsletters and a host of related information products. Newsletters from the company's Data Communications Group include: EDI News, Electronic Messaging News, Broadband Networking News, Data Channels, Quick Response News, Optical Memory News and Electronic Imaging Report. Phillips Publishing, which marks its 18th anniversary this month, has a history of rapid growth. For the year ending Dec. 31, 1991, the company reported revenues of $72 million, up 38 percent from the previous year. The company, headquartered in Potomac, now has two offices in the United Kingdom as well as offices across the United States. -0- 1/27/92 /CONTACT: Christopher Scotton, vice president, Phillips Publishing, 301-340-2100/ CO: Phillips Publishing, Inc.; Omnicom, Inc.
