PHILIPS, READER'S DIGEST SIGN CD-I PACT
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Philips Interactive Media of

America (PIMA) and The Reader's Digest Association, Inc. (NYSE: RDA) have agreed to produce a Compact Disc-Interactive (CD-I) program based on four best-selling Reader's Digest home improvement books.
The new CD-I programs, scheduled for release by early 1994, will show homeowners how to solve the 50 most common household do-it-yourself problems.
CD-I lets consumers access information and follow detailed step-by- step instructions. The discs are played on a CD-I player that connects to any TV set and includes a thumbstick controller that lets the user participate in the program and manipulate it.
"We're delighted Philips has chosen our books to adapt to this exciting new medium," said George V. Grune, chairman and chief executive officer of the Reader's Digest Association, Inc. "Finding new uses for our excellent editorial material will benefit both companies and our customers."
PIMA President Dr. Bernie Luskin added, "Reader's Digest is a respected publisher and also a household name that is sure to be enhanced by the interactive capabilities of CD-I."
The household and home repair projects are based on four best- selling global Reader's Digest Books: "Fix-it-yourself Manual," "New Complete Do-it-yourself Manual," "How to Do Just About Anything" and "Household Hints & Handy Tips."
Under the agreement, PIMA will sell the Reader's Digest home repair CD-I at retail, and Reader's Digest will retain all direct mail marketing rights.
Philips CD-I, called "The Imagination Machine," is available at more than 1,800 consumer electronics, specialty retailers and department stores. To promote CD-I during the holiday selling season, Philips has launched an aggressive broadcast, print and direct mail campaign, and is conducting close to 600 in-store dealer events called "Capture the Experience."
Los Angeles-based PIMA is the leading developer, distributor and marketer of CD-I programs. A wholly owned subsidiary of Philips Electronics, NV, PIMA owns and operates several CD-I title production studios in the United States.
The Reader's Digest Association, Inc. is a global publisher and a world leader in direct mail marketing of magazines, books, recorded music and home videos. Global headquarters are in Pleasantville, N.Y.
