PHILIPPINE AIR FORCE EXPANDS MD 500 DEFENDER FLEET

PHILIPPINE AIR FORCE EXPANDS MD 500 DEFENDER FLEET
SINGAPORE, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Philippine Air Force has

ordered eight additional MD 500 Defender helicopters to augment its present fleet of 22 in the current government campaign against communist rebels and other lawless elements.
The PAF accepted delivery of 22 Defender helicopters from McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Co. in 1990 and 1991. These attack helicopters are being used extensively by the air force for close air support, aerial reconnaissance and armed patrol missions primarily against communist insurgents.
The additional eight Defenders, with delivery expected beginning in the fourth quarter of this year, will be used in the intensified pacification efforts against anti-government forces. The value of the sale was not announced.
The McDonnell Douglas Defender helicopter entered military service in 1966, proving itself as an effective armed scout and light attack aircraft.
In addition to the Philippine Air Force, Defenders are operated in various configurations by the U.S. Army and military forces in Colombia, Kenya, Israel, South Korea and Japan. The helicopters have seen extensive combat throughout the world, most recently in the Middle East, Persian Gulf, Operation Desert Storm, Panama and Grenada.
The Defender, including the latest version that operates with McDonnell Douglas' exclusive NOTAR(TM) system for anti-torque and directional control, is capable of operating a full scale of weapon systems.
These include Hellfire, TOW and TOW II, and Stinger missiles, rockets, and a variety of automatic cannons.
