PHILIP ODEEN NAMED TO HEAD BDM
AS PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
MCLEAN, Va., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Frank C. Carlucci, chairman of the board of BDM Holdings, Inc., parent company of BDM International, Inc. (BDM), today announced the selection of Philip A. Odeen to succeed Earle C. Williams as president and chief executive officer of the BDM companies. He will assume his new duties by May 1.
Odeen joins BDM from Coopers and Lybrand, a leading international auditing and consulting firm. He has been serving as vice chairman, management consulting services, in New York after a lengthy career with the firm in Washington as managing partner.
Williams and Odeen agree that one of the new president's primary challenges will be to use Odeen's experience to improve BDM's marketing thrust by accelerating the company's diversification into commercial and international markets.
Odeen brings to BDM, one of the nation's foremost professional and technical services firms, a wealth of experience directly relating to key BDM program areas, including information technology, productivity enhancement, communications, government systems and operations (federal, state and local), quality management and others.
He is a former chairman of the Professional Services Council, BDM's primary industry association. He is also an expert and published author on many aspects of defense and national security, having served as director, program analysis, with the National Security Council and as principal deputy assistant secretary of defense. Before joining Coopers and Lybrand, Odeen was vice president of Wilson Sporting Goods Company in Chicago.
"We are enormously pleased by Philip Odeen's acceptance of our offer to head BDM," Carlucci said. He noted that Odeen was the unanimous choice of an executive search committee established by the board of directors to review potential candidates after Williams' announcement late last year that he planned to retire. Williams has headed BDM since 1972.
"I have worked extensively with Earle and others at BDM for many years," Odeen said. "BDM is a superb firm with outstanding management and staff, and I look forward to this new challenge with immense enthusiasm."
Williams has served for almost 30 years with BDM and 20 years as its president and CEO. He has long been identified with civic, community, political and charitable activities, while leading BDM from $7 million to $300 million in annual revenue.
"I have known Phil Odeen for over 10 years. His enthusiastic commitment to business leadership, service to our profession and concern for the principles and purposes that have built our nation are simply outstanding," Williams said. "In addition, he's a great guy. He'll be good for BDM."
BDM is an independent company, partially employee-owned, operating in association with The Carlyle Group, L.P., of which Carlucci, the former secretary of defense, is vice chairman. BDM management and Carlyle led a leveraged buyout of BDM in October 1990, before which it operated for two years as a subsidiary of Ford Aerospace Corporation. The company was established in 1960, went public in 1980, and was acquired by Ford in 1988.
Odeen has been directing approximately 2,000 Coopers and Lybrand professionals in over 30 cities, and he was responsible for client billings estimated at $250 million annually. He assumed his current post in 1991 after a 13-year career in the firm's Washington office, where he directed federal government consulting services.
Odeen is a graduate of the University of South Dakota (B.S. in government, magna cum laude) and the University of Wisconsin (M.S. in political science, with honors). He has also pursued graduate study at Liverpool University, Liverpool, England.
His honors and affiliations include Phi Beta Kappa, Fulbright Scholar, Flemming Award (10 outstanding young men in federal government), Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Medal, chairman of the Washington Affairs Committee of the Association of Management Consulting Firms, International Institute for Strategic Studies (London), President's Commission on Military Compensation, and former chairman of the Illinois Special Olympics. Odeen, a resident of McLean, is married to the former Marjorie Rogers and has three children.
Headquartered in McLean, BDM currently has more than 2,650 employees in approximately 50 offices in the United States and abroad. BDM provides professional and technical services to public and private sector clients in national defense and security, communications, energy, logistics, space, information systems, advanced technology, manufacturing technology, and certain other areas.
