PHILIP HAWLEY SETS RETIREMENT DATE, BEGINS SEARCH FOR SUCCESSOR
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Philip M. Hawley, chairman and chief executive officer of Carter Hawley Hales Stores Inc. (CHH) (NYSE: CHH), today announced that he intends to advise the company's board of directors that he wishes to retire from active management by Jan. 31, 1993. Hawley will remain a member of CHH's board after his retirement and serve on the search committee for a successor.
"My associates and I have worked together over the past 20 months to ensure that CHH would successfully emerge from Chapter 11 and be positioned as a strong and viable competitor. We have accomplished this, and I feel this is the proper time to begin the transition," Hawley said.
"At age 67, I believe the most important task facing the company is to put in place long-term management to lead its efforts over the next decade. While I will no longer be involved in the day-to-day operations after Jan. 31, I will continue to serve on the board of directors and be available in appropriate ways to the company and Zell/Chilmark."
Sam Zell, head of Zell/Chilmark Fund and CHH's largest shareholder, said, "We support Phil's decision and recognize that he has done an extremely effective job in managing the Chapter 11 process over the past 20 months. He has been a wonderful partner, and we are pleased that the relationship will continue through his membership on the board of directors."
Hawley began his career with the company in 1958 when he joined The Broadway as a buyer of women's sportswear. By 1968 he had risen to chairman and chief executive officer of The Broadway. In 1972 he was named president of Carter Hawley Hale, and in 1977 he assumed the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer. In 1983 he was elected chairman of the board and chief executive officer.
Carter Hawley Hales Stores Inc. operates 87 stores under the names of The Broadway, The Broadway Southwest, Emporium and Weinstocks.
