PHILADELPHIA SUBURBAN WATER COMPANY PURCHASES TWO CHESTER COUNTY MUNICIPAL WATER SYSTEMS

BRYN MAWR, Pa., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Philadelphia Suburban Water Company (PSW), the main subsidiary of the Philadelphia Suburban Corporation (NYSE: PSC), today announced the end of the year acquisition of the previously agreed upon purchase of the West Whiteland and Uwchlan Municipal Authority Water Systems, which serve eight townships in Chester County, Pa.
The townships affected by the transaction are East Caln, East Nantmeal, Uwchlan, Upper Uwchlan, Wallace, West Pikeland, West Vincent and West Whiteland.
The company paid $2.4 million for the West Whiteland system and $11.0 million for the Uwchlan system. With the addition of the eight townships in Chester County, this brings a total of 71 municipalities serviced in Chester,
Delaware and Montgomery counties. Philadelphia

Suburban Corporation is one of the nation's largest investor-owned water utilities.
This past year, Philadelphia Suburban Corporation has focused its corporate strategy on expanding the water company through acquisitions, reducing its debt through stock sales, and divesting the remainder of its diversified businesses such as engineering consulting and telemarketing firms. PSC said it plans to divest these remaining businesses in the near future and become a holding company for PSW.
The plans to purchase the two water systems were first announced last summer. The townships approved the sale in July, and in December, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission gave its final approval.
For the townships, the acquisition of the water system by PSW will mean that their residents will not have to rely strictly on ground water for their total supply. In the future, residents from these areas will also be provided water from PSW's recently constructed water treatment plant near Phoenixville. Officials from the townships have cited PSW's superior customer service record, water quality, and reliable water supply as reasons why they chose PSW to serve their residents.
For PSW, the acquisitions mean an additional 7,100 customers and an expansion of its territory by nearly 40 square miles. Employees of the Uwchlan Municipal Authority Water System became employees of the PSW as of Jan. 1.
"Philadelphia Suburban Water Company is pleased to have been chosen to serve the people of the West Whiteland and Uwchlan systems," said Nicholas DeBenedictis, chairman and chief executive officer. "As a local company, we are committed to providing our customers with the highest quality water service."
