PHILADELPHIA LAW FIRM SCHNADER, HARRISON, SEGAL & LEWIS AND ARARAT LAW SOCIETY HOLD RECEPTION TO HONOR DELEGATION OF ARMENIAN JURISTS MARCH 2
PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- A distinguished delegation of Armenian jurists will be honored at a reception co-hosted by the Philadelphia law firm of Schnader, Harrison, Segal & Lewis and the Ararat Law Society, a local association of judges and lawyers of Armenian ancestry.
The reception will be at 1600 Market St., 36th Floor, Philadelphia, Monday, March 2, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.(A) The delegation includes:
-- Tariel Barseghian, chief justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Armenia and a member of the law faculty at Erevan State University.
-- Alvina Gyulumian, associate justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Armenia.
-- Hovhannes Asrian, attorney, general counsel for the Lawyers' Union of Armenia.
-- Garen Chilingarian, attorney, chief, Codification Section, Supreme Court of the Republic of Armenia and former general counsel at Erevan State University.
The delegation is in Philadelphia in part to attend workshops at the University of Pennsylvania Law School on constitutional reform. The Armenian Bar Association, an international organization of Armenian attorneys, has arranged for the delegation to come to the United States to meet with, among other dignitaries, Chief Justice William Rehnquist of the U.S. Supreme Court.
"Lawyers practicing in the former Soviet republics that make up the Commonwealth of Independent States have a chance to reshape the world, both politically and economically," according to Mark Momjian, associate at Schnader, Harrison and a leading advocate of Armenian-American interests. "As a budding democracy, Armenia deserves the strong support of the United States and the international community."
The delegation of Armenian jurists visiting Philadelphia is leading an extraordinary national effort to transform Armenia's laws. "Already Armenia has introduced a multi-party political system, privatized real and personal property en route to a free market economy, approved laws on freedom of speech and conscience and otherwise secured the development of democratic institutions," said Thomas Samuelian, a judicial clerk in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
On the morning of March 2, members of the delegation will be traveling to New York to witness the historic flag-raising ceremony marking the Republic of Armenia's admission to the United Nations.
