 PHILADELPHIA ELECTRIC HOSTS CONFERENCE
AIMED AT MAKING ENERGY CONSERVATION WORK
Philadelphia Electric Company (NYSE: PE) and Synergic Resources Inc. of Bala Cynwyd, Pa., are sponsoring a two-day conference this week that will tackle the practical aspects of demand-side management (DSM).
The conference is being held on Tuesday, June 23, and Wednesday, June 24, at the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel at 2nd and Walnut streets in Philadelphia. Approximately 300 utility executives, managers and consultants from more than 100 companies across the country are expected to attend.
Demand-side management is the term used for a broad array of utility programs designed to encourage customers to use less energy, or to shift energy use to off-peak periods. PE manager of marketing Ken Black said, "The principle objective is to shape demand for electricity or natural gas in a way that is beneficial for utilities and their customers."
The implementation conference examines how to get DSM programs from the planning stages into the homes and businesses of customers. Black said, "Past DSM conferences have looked at how to plan programs and how to evaluate them, but this conference will look at the crucial nuts and bolts of conservation and load management."
The conference begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. with remarks from PE President and Chief Operating Officer Corbin A. McNeill Jr. McNeill said, "DSM will help reshape the electric utility in ways unimaginable 30 or 40 years ago. Successful implementation will help make utilities competitive and customer driven."
More than 60 other speakers including Alan Destribats, senior vice president of Synergic Resources, Inc., will address DSM issues like promotion, working with contractors, and achieving customer satisfaction. Separate sessions and workshops will be offered both days until 5 p.m.
