 PHILADELPHIA ELECTRIC COMPANY RECEIVES $2,000 FROM ANONYMOUS DONOR;
 PECO DIRECTED TO USE CONTRIBUTION FOR ENERGY ASSISTANCE FUND
 PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Philadelphia Electric Company (PECO) has received anonymous letters in the past, but one particular piece of correspondence that was delivered last week was definitely out of the ordinary. It contained $2,000.
 The envelope was mailed from a post office in Wilmington, Del., according to George Blair, PECO's director of Customer Billing & Central Services. The anonymous donor mailed the four $500 money orders to PECO with a typewritten note directing company officials to "please use the enclosed donation for needy customers." The $2,000 will be matched by PECO, dollar for dollar, and be deposited into its MEAF (Matching Energy Assistance Fund) program.
 "Philadelphia Electric is extremely grateful to the donor, whoever he or she may be, and we wish to convey our gratitude for his kind actions," said Al Mikalauskas, PECO vice president of Customer and Marketing Services. "We hope this display of kindness and generosity will spark others to make a contribution to help those who need assistance in paying their utility bills during the winter."
 The Matching Energy Assistance Fund (MEAF) relies upon donations from utility customers, who make a monthly pledge which is added to their bill. For every dollar donated, Philadelphia Electric Company, or another local utility, matches it for the MEAF effort. Contributions are distributed to various local emergency energy assistance agencies, which are tapped as a last resort by utility customers when publicly funded energy assistance grants are exhausted. All donations are tax- deductible.
 "In some cases, those who need the most help from MEAF may not have heat or cannot afford to turn the heat on," said Mikalauskas. "A customer's donation, even as little as $1 per month, can make all the difference and keep the heat and lights on."
 Last year, PECO customers helped 2,500 families make it through the winter. The need is even greater this year for MEAF assistance. A colder winter than normal has been predicted and due to the state of the economy, many more families are facing tough times. MEAF recipients can be the frail and elderly who have a fixed income, single parents on a limited income or those who have suffered an unexpected illness or a job layoff.
