PHEROS BRANDS ANNOUNCES FORMULATION FOR NEW ATTRACTANT

BELLINGHAM, Wash., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Forget flowers, candy, mushy greeting cards and candle-lit dinners with wine. Romance may get its most powerful boost yet from science.
Pheros Brands, a Washington bio-cosmetics firm today announced the formulation of a new human sex attractant. "Pheros" is a version of pheromones long recognized by science as a potent key to communication, including mating behavior among animals and insects.
Scientists used to think that human love and animal attraction were all in the head, Pheros' spokesman, Kirk Smalley, explained.
"But now they've found a chemical link (Time, February 1993). Human pheromones trigger biological responses in the opposite sex. It's much like the odorless chemical a female silkworm uses to attract a male. Honey bees use pheromones to `talk' without language."
According to Smalley, researchers recently confirmed the existence of the tiny vomeronasal organ, or VNO, inside the human nose, thought to provide a pathway for pheromone signals to the hypothalamus which controls nervous and hormonal systems. The VNO, first described by a French anatomist in 1891, had been written off by contemporary scientists as an evolutionary left-over.
"Pheros isn't a love potion," Smalley said, "it is a scientific formulation. Tests on the continent have made headlines, and research has been described in publications as conservative as Fortune and The Wall Street Journal. But Pheros is a product for men and women, not science journals. Uses have even included spraying it on restaurant seats and discovering they attracted women by a ratio of 17 to 1. That's science anybody can understand."
