 PHARR ELECTED TO SAFEWAY BOARD OF DIRECTORS
 SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Michael Pharr,


executive vice president and chief financial officer of Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY), was elected to the Safeway board of directors at the company's annual shareholder meeting in Scottsdale.
 Pharr will also become vice chairman of Safeway on the retirement of Harry Sunderland who leaves June 30 after 30 years of service.
 Re-elected to the Safeway board were Sam Ginn, chairman and CEO of the Pacific Telesis Group, and Robert MacDonnell, a general partner of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Co.
 Pharr was vice chairman of Mervyn's before joining Safeway in 1988. He had spent 16 years with Dayton-Hudson Corp. where he was senior vice president at the company's headquarters before taking the position at Dayton-Hudson's Mervyn's subsidiary.
